Saturday 3 October – Wind turbines near Shap

I spent an interesting afternoon in the company of Cllr Joan Raine. Yet again my rugby game was cancelled by the opposition (it would have been our first ever fixture with that particular club, so they didn’t get off to a good start!). Instead I visited Kirkby Stephens – I am familiar with the Mart, but less so with the town. Funnily enough Upper Eden’s rugby game was also cancelled. I then met Joan in the Chocolate Factory in Orton, which is exactly that, with a cafĂ© attached.

Then down some of the most twisted and beautiful lanes of Cumbria, and on to the village of Reagill. Now this village is half way between the Lake Districts and the North Pennines. In the middle of Reagill, surrounded by houses, is a field, the site of the proposed Reagill Wind Farm. 90% plus of the local residents are opposed to the development, and here is why:

This photo shows the site, someone lives 20 feet to the right of the photo, and there are several other homes very nearby. The proposed turbines are massive structures. The photo below shows the “bigger picture”.

I am going to research this issue!
