Thursday 10 September – Westmorland Show

A fantastic day for the Westmorland County Agricultural Show. This is the 21oth show, the society dates back to 1799, and even though the county exists no more, the County Show goes on in rude health.

I like this show since it can be seen as either a big small show, or a small big show. So there’s all the breeds that you would expect in, say, the Great Yorkshire Show, but it only takes a few minutes to get from one end of the show to the other.

I had a look at the pigs, cattle and goats but inevitably the sheep interested me most. Here I am with the Herdwicks.

And a better picture of some Herdwicks here. It was probably a bit warm for them today.

And here are the Beltex – Belgian Texels – being judged. They are culards – a double muscled breed with an extra set of muscles at the hind end, which is why the judging for this breed is being done from the back.

I also met Richard Dodds manning the Countryside Alliance stand, he’s on the Hexham Association Committee, doing a steady trade with calendars and cards.

I am sure the Westmorland Committee were delighted with their organisation, they had lots of tracks laid out to prevent cars getting bogged down, but the recent sunshine meant that they were really needed. Apparently the Show puts £2 million back into the local economy, I suspect it’s actually a lot more than that.
