Saturday 5 September – Tynedale Rugby

Players pay their silent tribute to Edward Robson

Players pay their silent tribute to Edward Robson

The  first game of the season had a particularly sombre start. All the teams present (and there were six of them) held a minute’s silence for Edward Robson, who died recently. He was a true pillar of the community and indeed a past President of Tynedale. The sheer number of players lined up was impressive. This is not the best photo, but it shows about half of the players in that line-up.

Then we and the Tynedale teams we were playing – the Vets then the Hoppers – had one for Andrew Robson. He was killed in a car crash some time ago, and we had never managed to find the time or place to hold a minute’s silence in his name – we finally put that right today.

The rugby was a round robin, which was sensible except that no one told me in the first set of games. Well the first half went even faster than it normally does, then the second half. We played very well indeed, thus winning 38-15 against the Vets. Then we were told to swap over jerseys and the penny dropped. So the Hoppers played the Vets, and we then lost against the Hoppers 31-10.

It was not too hard a start to the season, it’s not unusual for me to be utterly wrecked after the first game. Our first League game will be in two weeks against Gateshead, and that, as they say, will be completely different.
